Ancient Village of Bethany: A Place of Rest and Renewal
Location and Significance
Bethany, or ܒܝܬ ܥܢܝܐ Bēṯ ʿAnyā in Aramaic, is a village located on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, approximately 3km from Jerusalem. This ancient settlement holds a special place in history as a favored retreat for Jesus Christ.
Modern Connections
Today, the village of Bethany is known as Al-Eizariya or Al-Azariya in Arabic, meaning "the place of Lazarus." It is a modern town situated in the West Bank. Some scholars speculate that Bethany in Jesus' time may have been a neighborhood rather than a full-fledged town.
